If you think you know the story of Jesus’ birth, you may think again! The messages of this series will set us on a journey to the times and characters of Christmas so that we experience the birth of Christ in our lives in a new way.

Simple Rules for Money…
~ Stewardship Worship Series Oct 28th – Nov 11th, 2018 ~
We all need money to survive in the world, and how we use money goes all the way to the heart of our relationship with God and our lives as disciples of Jesus Christ.
John Wesley, in his sermon, “The Use of Money,” provided for Methodists some basic practices regarding the use of money, and they are still excellent Christian wisdom for us today.
Wesley’s rules for money were simple: Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.
Over the next three weeks during the stewardship campaign, we will explore Wesley’s guidance on money.

Revival…
~ Worship Series Sept 9th – Oct 14th, 2018 ~
In the society of the 1700’s, when Christians churches faced serious spiritual challenges in the midst of social and political changes, John Wesley, an Anglican priest and Oxford professor preached a faith that brought a revival of Christianity throughout England and across America, and became the founder of the Methodist movement.
Wesley’s life and message continue to speak to the Christians in the 21st Century, calling us to a revival of our hearts and minds, so that our lives can be changed, and we can transform the world.
For the next six weeks, inspired by Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book, Revival: Faith as Wesley Lived It, we will review Wesley’s life and message and rediscover our spiritual passion.

For four Sundays from August 12th to September 2nd, we will reflect on four of the 20 films Pixar has produced over the last 23 years and seek to find spiritual messages in them.
As you may already know, Pixar movies offer not only stunningly beautiful visuals but also plenty of simple yet profound truths that touch the hearts of people of all ages and cultures. The whole world gets excited when a new Pixar film comes out. So, it will be a fun experience for us to watch together some clips from the 4 movies and connect their spiritual messages to our Christian faith.
To make this new sermon series more meaningful, you are invited to participate in special mission projects of donating one small item per week for our neighbors in need.
Here is the series schedule of films and donations:

There will be baskets for your donations in the sanctuary narthex.

Empowered…
~ A Worship Series based on the book of Acts: 20 May – 24 June 2018 ~
On the day of Pentecost, first followers of Christ received the Holy Spirit, and they were changed forever. Empowered by the Spirit, they became bold in their acts of praise, prayer, healing, teaching, and witnessing. Empowered by the Spirit, they became a new movement that spread like wildfire.
In this Pentecost season series, we will turn to the book of Acts to learn about the boldness of the early Christian church.

Witnesses of Easter
~ Worship Series for Easter and Eastertide: 1 April – 13 May 2018 ~
The New Testament witnesses were fully aware of the background against which the resurrection took place. The body of Jesus, in accordance with Jewish burial custom, was wrapped in a linen cloth. Approximately 100 pounds of aromatic spices, mixed together to form a gummy substance, were applied to the wrappings of cloth about the body. After the body was placed in a solid rock tomb, an extremely large stone was rolled against the entrance of the tomb. Large stones weighing approximately two tons were normally rolled by means of levers against a tomb entrance.
Roman guards were stationed at the tomb. They affixed on the tomb the Roman seal, which was meant to “prevent any attempt at vandalizing the sepulcher.” Anyone trying to move the stone from the tomb’s entrance would have broken the seal and thus incurred the wrath of Roman law.
But three days later the tomb was empty. The followers of Jesus said He had risen from the dead. They reported that He appeared to them during a period of 40 days, showing Himself to them by many “infallible proofs.” In this series, we will examine the stories of the Easter Witnesses.

April 8: Witnesses of Easter: Thomas — John 20:24-29

Jesus in the Gospel of John
~ Worship Series for Lent: 18 February – 30 March 2018 ~
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are the four gospels in the Bible, and John is very different in many ways from the other three (who are called Synoptic Gospels). The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because they include many of the same stories, often in a similar sequence and in similar or sometimes identical wording. They stand in contrast to John, whose content is comparatively distinct. The Jesus whom we encounter in the unique gospel of John is not the same Jesus that Matthew, Mark, and Luke portray.
You are invited to join in worship and explore together several key themes in the gospel of John, as well as read the entire book (only 21 chapters) throughout the season of Lent. It will be a very meaningful Lenten journey.

Half Truths
~ Worship Series: 14 January – 11 February 2018 ~
There are some simple phrases that we often use to guide our lives. And they may even sound Christian – like something you might find in the Bible:
- Everything happens for a reason.
- God helps those who help themselves.
- God won’t give you more than you can handle.
- God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
- Love the sinner, hate the sin.
Though these statements all capture some element of truth, they miss the point in very important ways. They can mislead people about their understanding of God.
Join us in our new worship series from January 14 to February 11, 2018 as we examine these common phrases and we search for the whole truth, based on Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book, Half Truths.
This is a great opportunity for you to invite your friends and neighbors to worship, using the bulletin insert about the series. Inserts are available here, and also in the sanctuary narthex (entrance).
During the worship series, a small group gathering will be held after the worship service for those who want to discuss the weekly topic with others.
Just grab a cup of coffee/tea/snack in the Fellowship Hall and come to the Fireside Room.

Angels Among Us
~ Advent Worship Series ~
The angels that appear in the story of Jesus’ birth would have been very comfortable in our world of tweets and hashtags. Their messages were often short and to the point – their favorite line being #DoNotBeAfraid. As we look at the stories of these winged messengers, we will contemplate what message we can offer that will counteract a culture of fear and bring #morehope, #morepeace, #morejoy, and #morelove and #morelife to the world.
Please join us this Advent season, beginning December 3rd.

Can You Hear Me Now?
Stories of Calling in the Old Testament
– November Sermon Series –
Paul said that all Scripture is God-breathed. Still, when did you last hear a sermon on the Old Testament? The Old Testament sets up the categories for how we see Jesus. It shows how God calls us to live in our religious, economic, and political realities.
The Old Testament can be seen as an indispensable source of knowledge about the things of God…to work deeply with the challenge found in a prophetic passage, or a narrative, expecting to find in the text itself some guidance for meeting that challenge…to discover in the instructions and prayers of the Old Testament a substantial measure of ‘the peace of God, which passeth all understanding’ (Philippians 4:7)…

Defying Gravity
– October Sermon Series –
Over a four-week period, we will examine the generous life – what it is and why it can be hard to experience. We will be studying the topic of generosity, including data from surveys, insights from experts, and conversations with generous people about their goals and habits. We want to understand why generosity brings people joy and what forces work against it. Many of us want to experience the significance of blessing others but feel trapped by past decisions and misled by a society that bombards us with messages of having more and having better. The good news is that Jesus offers us a way to “defy gravity” and break free from the culture of more.
From October 8 – 29th, come hear what the Bible and others say about how to experience a generous life. There will be exercises and challenges during this series to help you consider your relationship with money, possessions, and giving. You will not want to miss a single Sunday of “Defying Gravity.” We want to have fun with this and encourage you to share some of your activities (like before and after pictures of de-cluttering your life) and post them on our church Facebook page with the hashtag: #CampbellUMCDefyingGravity
On October 29, we will celebrate our commitments for the next year with an all-church brunch after worship.

— Rev. Ouk-Yean Kim Jueng Listen to Sermon Read Sermon
Why?
– The September Sermon Series –
Acts 2:42 could be considered a purpose statement for the church: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Also, the church is to be about the business of ministering to those in need. This includes not only sharing the gospel, but also providing for physical needs (food, clothing, shelter) as necessary and appropriate.
So, why do we have church? Paul gave an excellent illustration to the believers in Corinth. The church is God’s hands, mouth, and feet in this world—the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). We are to be doing the things that Jesus Christ would do if He were here physically on the earth. The church is to be “Christian,” “Christ-like,” and Christ-following.

Summer in the Psalms
The book of Psalms possesses an enduring fascination for God’s people. This collection of 150 poems has supplied some of our best loved passages in scripture. They simultaneously express a frankness and intimacy of emotion including love and adoration for God, the battle of fear and trust, walking with God even when the way seems dark, and thankfulness for God’s care. But this diversity is unified by one element ~ they are centered upon God.

Testify to Love.
Your Story Matters.
In this sermon series, we’ll explore not only “My Story” (an introduction to Pastor Ouk-Yean),
but also “Our Story” and “God’s Story”.
This was also the theme for the 2017 California-Nevada Annual Conference, held June 21-25.
“As you serve others, share your testimony of the love of God with them. Share with them the good news of the saving grace of Christ Jesus and invite them to church. If those you are sharing a witness with already have a church or a community of faith, then encourage them to fully participate in their church or community of faith, and you go and do the same.”

Postcards from the Edge
Of the Promised Land:
In this sermon series, we’ll immerse ourselves in the Exodus story, which comes from the Jewish part of our Judeo-Christian tradition. It’s the tradition Jesus grew up in and practiced. The story he knew. The story of his people. And it has everything in it: brokenness and redemption, promises and betrayal, the people’s long search for God in their midst. All the ways God shows up.
We’ll listen for the ways the rich stories of the Exodus—the Jews’ journey from slavery to freedom—
echo in our experiences today.
You may be surprised at how relevant these stories are.

Roll Down Justice:
Our Worship Theme for Lent
Lent is a time for reminding ourselves who we are called to be in this world.
Our worship during Lent—the 40 days before Easter–is inspired by Amos, a prophet whose message is that God calls us to let “justice roll down like waters.”
Worship without justice is not what God wants from us. Our songs, our prayers, our rituals must move us to action on behalf of the oppressed.
All through this season, powerful music and reminders of the rituals of baptism will offer paths for reflection and renewed commitment to the heart of the Gospel: God’s love for all people.
What prejudices are we challenged to “give up” as a Lent practice?
How are we willing to “give” of ourselves for the sake of the world?
Find the Lent Brochure with Worship, Lenten activities, & Holy Week info here.

This Is Who We Are:
Conversions and Convictions
The Church’s Mission is clear, and it is given to us by our tradition: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. But what does that mean—for us, here, now? Do all of the activities and programs of the church align with and support that mission?
What does a disciple look like, in Campbell, California, in 2017? How do you “make” disciples? What part of the world are we trying to transform, and what kind of “transformation” are we talking about?

Advent: Even Now…
something waits to be born.
A Sermon Series for Advent 2016
The season of Advent – the four weeks before Christmas – is as ancient as Christianity itself. Int the Church, the season of Christmas begins on Christmas Day. Until then, we are in a season of waiting and watching, preparing ourselves for the birth of God into the world of human life. Until the Christ Child is born, in a blaze of stars and light, we wait in darkness.

Freedom: 12-Step Spirituality
for Everyone Who Struggles
Sermon Series – June through August 2016
Have you ever visited an AA or Al-Anon meeting? You might be amazed at the depth of personal connection evident among the people there, and their openness with one another.
I think this is what church should feel like.
At least part of the reason church doesn’t feel like this is that our worship services often do not require or invite the deep vulnerability that leads to that kind of connection & transformation. Have we lost the sense that the need for forgiveness, healing, and wholeness is our common experience?
The “Twelve Steps” are a path to knowing God. Not the path, and not a path that will work for everyone. But they are a path—one that might lead to freedom, (even for people who do not think of themselves as addicted). This sermon series is an exploration of that path.
Each week’s sermon will track a step or two. And I think you will see the remarkable way in which the Twelve Steps mirror the teachings of Jesus.
Join us for a summer of honesty and growth. – Rev. Kathi McShane

What do we believe? What does it mean to believe something as ‘an article of faith’? In this Sermon Series, we will look at a historic creed of the Christian Church (The Apostles’ Creed), as well as some contemporary affirmations of faith. “Into-Me-See”: Knowing & Being Known
– Lent 2016
There are many forms of intimacy. In its truest sense, intimacy is a closeness between persons that comes with familiarity, understanding and acceptance. My favorite re-phrasing of the word intimacy is “into-me-see”. To be in relationship with Jesus is to be in relationship with other people. That relationship necessarily involves listening, asking questions that invite the other into connection, and self-disclosure that is mutual, respectful, and safe.
The practice of intimacy—exercising the heart and using the skills required to create open, authentic and loving relationships—is the spiritual discipline on which we will focus this Lent.
